What is World Habitat Day?
It's day of grassroots action to advocate for universal decent housing.
World Habitat Day is the one day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing.
The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1985 that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.
World Habitat Week Proclamation
Austin Habitat was honored that the City of Austin issued a proclamation naming October 6-11, 2014, as World Habitat Week in Austin. Pictured right is Mayor Lee Leffingwell presenting the Proclamation to Austin Habitat VP of Engagement, Sarah Joiner on October 2, 2014. What a perfect way to kick off our week-long celebration and campaign to build support for affordable and decent housing in Austin and across the world!
city-wide door parade
Groups across Central Texas helped us raise awareness about affordable homeownership by painting and displaying a door in our door parade.
Dillard Westmoreland, representing World Habitat Day sponsor The Home Depot, had a hard time selecting the winning doors, but awarded first place to the Little Helping Hands, second place to Boys and Girls Club Thurmond Heights, and third place to the Torch Club for the most creative doors. The Social Media Award of most likes and hashtags went to the Round Rock Express!
Check out the map below to see how far our door parade stretched. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to everyone who participated!
We had a great time at our community celebration and door painting event at the ReStore at 310 Comal Street on Saturday, October 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. The family-friendly celebration included face painting, various activities, food and refreshments, music and games -- not to mention great deals throughout the ReStore!
