How It Works

Buying a home in partnership with Austin Habitat for Humanity is a unique opportunity.We build homes every month with hardworking, low-income families and the community and then sell the homes at no profit with affordable mortgages to Habitat families, whom we have prepared to be successful homeowners.

Austin Habitat's waitlist is currently open! If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please email with your name, contact number, email address and family household size. 

Austin Habitat partners with families to be successful homeowners by training them to pay for their homes, maintain their homes and connect with their community. We require our families to take our homebuyer education classes on topics ranging from finance and budgeting to home repair and maintenance. Additionally, Austin Habitat provides family mentors who meet regularly with Habitat families to guide them through the home buying process. We build high quality and energy efficient homes. Home styles may vary in each of our neighborhoods, and the size of your home is determined by the size of your family.

Austin Habitat homebuyers must meet three primary requirements:

  1. Crowded, substandard, or cost-burdensome living conditions
  2. Willingness to partner
  3. Ability to pay.

If you are approved as a Habitat homebuyer, you are required to complete 300 hours of sweat equity building yours and your neighbors' homes, pay a down payment, and commit to pay a 30 year mortgage.

Income Guidelines

To qualify, you must earn 60% or less than the Median Family Income.See limits below.

1 Person Household: $34,200
2 Person Household: $39,050
3 Person Household: $43,950
4 Person Household: $48, 850
5 Person Household: $52,750
6 Person Household: $56,650

If you do not qualify for Austin Habitat's Affordable Homeownership Program because your income is higher than 60% MFI, you may be eligible for homeownership through our subsidiary HomeBase. HomeBase's program serves the community who makes 80% of the Median Family Income.
