Youth Opportunities

Children are always welcome to enjoy cake with us at our dedication ceremonies!

Safety is one of our greatest priorities at Austin Habitat, which is why volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and bring their parent or guardian, in order to work on our Construction sites or at the ReStore.  In Home Repair volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  But because we welcome everyone in our community to join us in our mission, regardless of age, we invite young supporters to contribute in other ways.

Ages 5 – 15
Prepare Lunch for Volunteers:
Youth can support Austin Habitat by supporting our volunteers! A hot cup of coffee on a cold morning or a homemade cookie at the end of a long day might be the extra support a volunteer needs to succeed.
Host a fundraising or education event: Youth can use their talents to support Austin Habitat by hosting a dinner theater, music concert, or play at  school or at a place of worship. Proceeds from ticket sales could help purchase a front door or a new roof for a Habitat house. Youth can also participate in fun art projects, such as painting hammers or doors, and sell their creations to the public.

See the “Youth Programs” website for activities, lessons and resources to help educate and involve young people.

Ages 16 and above

Construction Activities for Individuals:

Those who are 16 years old and older may work on a Construction site provided their parent or guardian has filled out a Minor’s Release of Liability form. An adult over 21 must also accompany them on the build site.
People under 18 must not use power tools, perform demolition, work on the roof, or work from a height 6 feet or higher (for example on the 2nd level of scaffolding or from an extension ladder).

Construction Activities for Youth Groups:

Please keep the following in mind.
• This is only available for those who are 16 and older
• Each youth must have a Release of Liability form signed by a parent or guardian
• Each group must provide an adult contact
• High school age groups need a one adult to four youths ratio on the job site!

Habitat ReStore

16 & 17 year-olds can volunteer with a Release of Liability form signed by a parent or guardian. They must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21.

Summer youth opportunities with Habitat for Humanity International

Learn and Build Experience - For two weeks during the summer, students ages 16 to 18 can experience Habitat’s work outside of their communities. In addition to two weeks of service, students will learn about the need for Habitat through educational activities and cultural programs.
