About Us » New Homeownership
“With Habitat, we build more than just houses. We build families, community, and hope.” –President Jimmy Carter
At Austin Habitat for Humanity, we build homes in partnership with hardworking, low-income families and the community. We sell the homes at no profit with zero-percent interest mortgages to partnering families, whom we have prepared to be successful homeowners.
As the BUILDER...
Austin Habitat manages the land development and construction processes, purchasing and preparing the land where we build. Habitat also purchases the materials and hires the professional services to build the home. We engage the entire community to raise the resources to build our homes, including: congregations, businesses, schools, civic organizations, associations, government, and individual volunteers.
We also engage the community to provide the volunteer labor to build the homes. Our experienced and passionate construction staff, along with our skilled regular volunteers, leads volunteers groups through the entire construction process. Our volunteers build hand in hand with our partner families, who must contribute 400 hours of sweat equity on their homes and the homes of their neighbors.
As the BANK…
Austin Habitat ensures the credit worthiness of the families we select and prepares them for the financial responsibilities of homeownership. We issue and hold the zero-interest mortgages, and we offer affordable monthly mortgage payments, set at no more than 30 percent of household income at the time of purchase. This creates a 15-30 year relationship between Austin Habitat, every new homeowner, and the community.
As the BRIDGE…
Austin Habitat partners with families to be successful homeowners by training them to pay for their homes, maintain their homes, and connect with their communities. We require our families to take 24 hours of homeowner education, on topics ranging from finance to home repair to pet care.
In addition, we provide Family Mentors, or trained volunteers who meet regularly with partner families to guide them through the homebuying process.
